Levator Scapulae Pain: The Corner Knot You Keep Digging Into
Levator scapulae pain has a tell. It is the corner knot you keep digging your fingers into. The knot at the top inner corner of your shoulder blade. It is your levator, the muscle that runs from that corner up into your neck, and it is why your neck will not turn.
Two favorite knots
Your levator has two favorite knots. The first sits at the corner of the blade. The second sits up in the crook of your neck, where the fibers twist.
The crook of your neck is an anatomical hotspot. Pain there does not behave like regular shoulder tension. It plays by different rules.
You know the pattern. You wake up with a crick in your neck. You cannot turn your head side to side. You turn your whole body just to look at someone. That is the levator stealing your head turn.
Victim, not culprit
Here is the part most people miss. The levator is usually a victim, not the culprit. It overworks for a mid-back that went quiet. When the muscles between your shoulder blades stop showing up, the levator picks up the slack. It braces, it tightens, and it complains.
That is why the release gives you relief now, and waking the mid-back back up is the long-term fix. Release is step one. Strength is step two.
The release
Ball in the neck pocket, forehead resting on the wall. Pin it, hold the pressure, and move your arm and head gently. The pin holds the spot while the movement drags the release through the whole muscle, instead of camping on one sore dot.
Single ball to find it, peanut to finish it. Melt there first, then turn your head slow.
Gentle pressure only, ball melts in, never force it. Keep the ball on the back of the neck pocket, off the front of the throat and anywhere a pulse is felt, off the bones of the neck and the collarbone. Stop for dizziness, vision changes, numbness or tingling down the arm, shooting pain, or a strange pulse feeling. Sit this one out with a fresh neck or shoulder injury.
Keep going
This release is from my Shoulders class, one of seven in the Myofascial Release Bundle. The class works the whole shoulder map, so the levator stops having to do the mid-back's job. Let me know if you need the link!
