Quadratus Lumborum Pain Relief: Your QL Is Pulling the Strings
Quadratus lumborum pain relief starts with naming the right muscle. Your QL is notorious for low back pain. One-sided ache. The spine takes the blame, but the QL is pulling the strings.
Those strings run from your lowest rib to the top of your pelvis. When they are too tight, they pull the rib and pelvis together and crunch the low spine on that side.
What your QL does all day
Your QL hikes your hip every step you take. Walking, carrying a kid on one hip, standing on one leg. It never clocks out.
It is a stabilizer. Its job is to hold your spine steady while everything else moves. But it gets drafted into doing everyone else's job. When the glutes go quiet and the deep core does not show up, the QL braces the spine and never lets go. That is the ache.
Here is the part most people miss. The QL is usually the victim, not the culprit. It overworks for a system that went quiet. Release it and the whole low back gets room to move again.
How do you know it is your QL?
Hike one hip up, then the other. Go back and forth. Feel that one-sided dull ache? That is your QL.
The test is simple because hiking the hip is literally the QL's job. The test asks the muscle to work, and the ache tells you which side is overdoing it. This is a self-check, not a diagnosis. The ache could also come from the hip or the low back joints. But for most one-sided low back aches, the QL is where the story starts.
The release
Roller under the low back first, then the ball, then the ball on the block. Knees drop side to side and let the low back unwind. Gentle pressure, breathe, let it melt.
Keep the roller and ball on the muscle beside the spine, off the spine itself. Let your body weight set the pressure. Never force it. Stop right away for sharp low back pain, numbness or tingling down the leg, or dizziness.
Release the QL and the ache eases, and the things that felt off limits are available again.
Keep going
This release is from my Low Back class, one of seven in the Myofascial Release Bundle. The class walks through the full low back sequence, so the QL stops having to do everyone's job. Let me know if you need the link!
